	American Women in Science

The Association for Women in Science (AWIS), a non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C. was founded 25 years ago to expand education and employment opportunities in science for girls and women. AWIS has programs and activities at both the national and local level. National activities include a mentoring project, sponsored by the National Science Foundation, a national internship and the AWIS Registry of Women in Science, Technology, and Engineering, a multi-disciplinary searchable database. Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society

Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society (Tri Beta) is a national organization that functions as an honor and professional society for students in the biological sciences. Our chapter (Sigma Theta) sponsors numerous activities including:

• Scholarships for the first time we will be awarding scholarship money to some of our members. There is a competitive process that starts with an application. See one of the officers for details.
• Guest speakers who work in various areas of biology, including medicine, government and environmental consulting.
• Field trips to places such as the county examiner's office to view an autopsy, local zoos and state parks.
• Scientific meetings including the Texas Society of Mammalogists and our regional Beta Beta Beta conference. Suzanne Foxworth, Kristy Lee, Christina Malakowsky and Michael Myers all gave research presentations at last year's Tri-Beta regional meeting in April. Suzanne Foxworth will be giving a presentation at the Texas Academy of Sciences meeting in March. Donnie Anderson, Suzanne Foxworth and ??? will be giving presentations at this year's Tri-Beta regional meeting.
• Campouts throughout Texas, including Big Bend National Park and several sites in Oklahoma.
• Service projects in and around our campus. We have worked hard building, planting and maintaining a Wildscape area next to the science building. This is an ongoing project. We have also participated in local clean-up programs. We won Texas Wesleyan's Student Activities Service Award in 1995.
• Fund Raisers have included selling doughnuts, hot dogs and T-shirts on campus. This year's big success was hosting a food tasting of Frito-Lay products.
• Social Events such as Christmas parties and picnics on campus or at local state parks. Two years ago we organized the annual Science Banquet which was held at The Spaghetti Warehouse. We will be co-hosting this year.

Donnie Anderson, Christina Malakowsky, Summer Crow and Michael Grillo are this year's officers.
