Texas Wesleyan University
Summer Research Students at Work

Every summer research in Organic Chemistry is funded by a grant from the Robert A.Welch Foundation. In 1982, Wesleyan became the first private school to be awarded the grant. For 16 years the Wesleyan Chemistry Dept. has been awarded this grant, and research projects such as the oxidation of organic carboniol compounds using sodium hypochlorite and others, have been able to continue.

This summer the students participating in organic research with advisor, Dr. Landolt, were Ryan Hayes, a sophomore chemistry major and Jennifer Ries, a senior in biochemistry. This project gave both Ryan and Jennifer "hands-on" experience using the gas chromatograph for analysis of the reactions.

Fadzi Mantiziba (center) is a junior in chemistry. She is presently doing analytical reasearch on trihalomethanes (THMs) in environmental methods of analysis. Her research advisor is Dr. Jones (left).

This other character is Jose DeLeon, a junior chemistry major. He is also working with Dr. Jones in evaluating GC/MS methods for the analysis of fossil fuels.

Nadia Rodriguez (to the right) and Karina E. Hernandez conducted a study of elementary school students that participated in Wesleyan's Chemistry Camp for Kids. The study analyzed different economic statuses along with educational environments and language barriers as they effect a child's education.

Alesha Mize, a senior biochemistry major, worked this summer on a research project in electrophoresis with advisor Dr. Rodriguez.
