Dr. Elizabeth H. Battles, Associate Professor of English and Division of Humanities Chair, received her undergraduate degree from the University of Arizona, a B.A. and M.A. from the University of Oxford, England, and a Ph.D. from Texas Christian University. Her teaching and research interests are Composition and British Literature. She has developed pedagogy for and has taught numerous courses in a computer assisted environment.

Dr. Linda Cole Carroll, Assistant Professor of English and Coordinator of University Writing, has twenty-nine years experience teaching English. A specialist in rhetoric—especially semiotics—and American literature, Dr. Carroll teaches composition and supervises Adjunct English Instructors. She earned her B.A. in English from the University of Texas at Arlington and her M.A. in American Literature and Ph.D. in Rhetoric from Texas Woman's University. Dr. Carroll serves as Faculty Advisor to Alpha Lambda Delta, Freshmen Honor Society. Dr. Carroll will co-sponsor an Ireland Study Abroad with Dr. Jesse Sowell and Dr. Steve Simons in the summer of 2002. Dr. Thom D. Chesney, Assistant Professor of English and Internship Coordinator, received his A.B. in Spanish from Washington University (St. Louis), M.A. in Creative Writing from Minnesota State University—Mankato, and Ph.D. in English Literature from The Florida State University. His teaching and research interests include British Literature—especially Modern and Post-Colonial—composition, creative writing, and folklore. Dr. Chesney serves as the general editor for Aries, Texas Wesleyan University’s national journal of art and literature. In addition, he coordinates the department’s internship program for students in any major who are interested in publishing, editing, public relations and other writing-related careers.

Dr. Jeffrey DeLotto, Professor of English, teaches writing, Shakespeare, and Romantic, Victorian, and Modern British Literature, when not working on his own poetry or prose. A native of Florida, he has also taught writing and literature at Texas Tech University, at Yarmouk University (in Jordan), and as a 1992-93 Fulbright Lecturer in American Literature at the University of Plovdiv in Bulgaria. He also served as the dramaturge for Shakespeare in the Park's 1995 presentation of The Tempest. A number of his poems and essays have appeared in magazines, journals, and anthologies, and he has published a chapbook entitled Voices at the Door, from the Maverick Press. Dr. DeLotto is now trying to get back to a novel he has left unfinished for far too long and is putting together another collection of poems.

Dr. Miriam Tankersley Espinosa, Professor of English and Assistant Dean of the School of Science and Humanities, received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy Summa cum Laude from the University of Dallas in 1963, a Master of Arts degree in English from the University of Dallas in 1971, a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Humanities from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1981, and a Juris Doctor degree from the Texas Wesleyan School of Law in 1995  Dr. Espinosa came to Texas Wesleyan University in 1978. Dr. Espinosa is also the Director of both the Pre-Professional Program and Wesleyan's Weekend University. Her subject areas of expertise are Women's Studies, American Literature, Medieval Literature, Adolescent Literature, Writing Pedagogy, and Humanities.

Ms. Billie Hara, Instructor of English and Director of the Wesleyan Collegiate Institute, earned a B.A. from Texas Christian University, an M.A. from Southern Methodist University, and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Arlington.  While directing the Wesleyan Collegiate Institute, Ms. Hara combines an interest in service learning with the rigors of college-level writing in projects such as Writing Partners and  TIPS (an interactive writing project with K-12 students in remote areas of West Texas).  Ms. Hara also serves as associate editor of descant, a national journal of poetry and fiction, and is author/site manager of the Complete Stanley Fish Resource Site.  Other links to Ms. Hara's work and academic interests can be found on her web page:  web.txwes.edu/hara.

Dr. Price McMurray, Assistant Professor of American Literature, graduated summa cum laude from Middlebury College with a B.A. in American Literature and a minor in Italian; he subsequently studied at Stanford and Yale, worked for an antiquarian bookseller, and earned a M.A. and Ph.D. in English from the University of South Carolina. Dr. McMurray's teaching and research interests include American literature, the medieval and renaissance literatures of England and Italy, and composition & introduction to literature. He has contributed to journals such as Milton Quarterly and Studies in American Fiction.

Ms. Stacia Dunn Neeley, Assistant Professor of English, is a Ph.D. candidate at TCU specializing in rhetoric and composition. She holds a B.A. and M.A. from Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas. Her recent composition textbook, Academic Literacy, focuses on the skills students need to succeed in writing college-level assignments in the humanities and social sciences. Stacia's research interests include composition theory, writing program administration, the history of rhetoric, feminist rhetorical theory, and sage discourse in the Victorian novel. Her dissertation, "Critical Contentions: Feminism(s) and Critical Pedagogy in Composition Studies," is a work of educational anthropology that analyzes radical teaching methods discussed in academic publications between 1980 and 2000 in composition studies.

Dr. Carl Smeller, Assistant Professor of English, took a B.A. from Kent State University with majors in English and History, and earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in English from Northwestern University.  His teaching and research interests include American literature, especially nineteenth-century literature and poetry, grammar, composition, literature by American women, and gender studies.

Adjunct Faculty

Dr. Jon Anderson, Adjunct Professor of English, graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a BS in mathematics and a BA in English. He earned his Ph.D. from Texas Christian University with an emphasis in nineteenth-century British literature. His interests also include composition, world literature, twentieth-century literature, and creative writing.

Mr. J. Blake Carpenter, Adjunct Instructor of French, received his B. A. degree in French from Davidson College in North Carolina in 1985. He studied at Paul Valéry University in Montpellier, France and taught English for the Technology Institute at the University of Nice, France. He received his M. Div. degree with Biblical Languages from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth in May 2001. Mr. Carpenter is currently pursuing a Th. M. Dr. Karen Hodges, Adjunct Professor of English, earned a B.A. in English from Texas Tech University, an M.A. in English from the University of North Texas (with a concentration in American Literature before 1900) , and a Ph.D. from Texas Women's University in Rhetoric and Composition.  Her teaching and research interests include American literature, World literature, and Rhetoric and Composition.

Ms. Margaret Meador, Adjunct Instructor of English, has a B. M. in music from Baylor University and an M.A. in English from the University of Texas at Arlington.

Ms. Caryn Voskuil, Adjunct Instructor of English
Ms. DeeAnn Ward, Adjunct Instructor of English, earned a B.A. in Physical Education (Dance and Performing Arts with a minor in English) from Texas Tech University, an M.A. in English from Tarleton State University, and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in English from the University of Texas at Arlington, (with an emphasis in American literature, minor in Rhetoric).  Current research and teaching interests include the sense of space and the poetic landscape in Texas Literature.
