The Wesleyan Collegiate Institute introduces a higher education experience to (at most) 25 high school seniors each year who are capable of attending college, but who are at risk of not staying in high school, or not even applying to college. The Institute, developed through Texas Wesleyan University and FWISD in 1992, offers dual high school and college credit for required English courses. Participating seniors can earn six transferable college hours before their high school graduation by passing the two English courses required of any first-year student: English 1301 (rhetoric and composition) and English 1302 (literature and composition). |
| The Wesleyan Collegiate Institute helps students from various Fort Worth Independent School District high schools make the transition from high school to the university. But unlike other area programs that offer dual high school/college credit, the Institute offers students much more: |
| Texas Wesleyan University provides each student with books, lunch, and tuition for the entire academic year, as well as a university identification card that gains him/her access to campus resources (the West library, computer labs, career guidance and counseling, and admission advising). |
| Students selected for the Wesleyan Collegiate Institute are in the top half of their graduating class, have recommendations from both an academic counselor and an English teacher, and of course, have the desire to be here. Institute students accept Texas Wesleyan's support, but are in no way obligated to attend Texas Wesleyan University at a future date. Again, Texas Wesleyan University believes in every student and offers this program as an outreach to the FWISD community. |
